V-E Day - Bevrijdingsdag in Europa (2024)

In Nederland wordt op 5 mei Bevrijdingsdag gevierd. Op die dag werd de capitulatie van het Duitse leger in Nederland getekend. Veel andere landen vieren de afloop van de oorlog echter op 8 of 9 mei. Hoe zit het precies met die datum en waarom is er onenigheid tussen sommigelanden?

Het einde nadert

In april 1945 stortte het laatste verzet van Nazi-Duitsland tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog in. De geallieerden trokken op in het westen, terwijl de Sovjets in het oosten aan de poorten van Berlijn stonden. Eind april al gingen er geruchten dat de Duitsers op het punt stonden om een vredesverdrag te tekenen in San Francisco, maar dit bleek niet te kloppen.

Op 30 april 1945 pleegde Adolf Hitler zelfmoord in zijn bunker in Berlijn. In de week die volgde werden er op verschillende plekken in Europa lokale vredesverdragen gesloten door de Duitsers. Zo gaven de Duitse troepen in Nederland zich over op 5 mei, waardoor wij die dag nog altijd bestempelen als Bevrijdingsdag.

Capitulatie in Reims

De geallieerde troepen wilden echter ook een officiële capitulatie van de Duitsers, waarmee de oorlog definitief beëindigd kon worden. Op 7 mei reisde daarop de stafchef van het Duitse leger, Alfred Jodl, naar de Franse stad Reims om het Duitse ‘Instrument of Surrender’ te ondertekenen.

Jodl hoopte in eerste instantie dat het verdrag zich kon beperken tot enkel de Duitse troepen in het Westen. In het Oosten van Europa, vooral rond Praag, warennamelijk nog steeds gevechten gaande tussen Duitse- en geallieerde troepen. De Amerikanen dreigden echter om in dat geval de westelijke linies af te sluiten. Dat zou betekend hebben dat Duitse troepen in het oosten bij een nederlaag niet meer naar het Westen konden vluchten, waardoor ze sowieso in handen van de Sovjets zouden vallen. Jodl zag daarna geen andere optie meer en ondertekende het verdrag, waardoor alle Duitse troepen, in oost en west, zich overgaven.

7, 8 of 9 mei?

Na de Duitse capitulatie barstte het feest bij de geallieerden los. De Sovjet-Unie was echter nog niet helemaal tevreden. De Sovjets vonden dat de rang van Jodl niet hoog genoeg was. Deze ontevredenheid kwam voort uit de Duitse capitulatie na de Eerste Wereldoorlog, die ook niet door een hooggeplaatste officier ondertekend was. Hitler en zijn volgelingen gebruikten dit argument later om te stellen dat de Duitse troepen zich daardoor nooit officieel hadden overgegeven, maar waren verraden door politieke tegenstanders. Vooral Sovjetleider Stalin wasbang dat de Duitsers dit in de toekomst wellicht nog een keer zouden doen.

De rest van de geallieerden konzich hier wel in vinden en dus werd besloten het document een dag later opnieuw te laten ondertekenen. Ditmaal werd veldmaarschalk Wilhelm Keitel opgetrommeld om in een buitenwijk van Berlijn de oorlog opnieuw officieel te beëindigen. De Britten en Amerikanen hadden 8 mei op dat moment al uitgeroepen tot ‘Victory in Europe Day’. Door fouten in het document, de Russen waren een paar zinnen vergeten, kon Keitel op 8 mei de papieren echter nog niet onderteken. Uiteindelijk deed hij dit pas in de vroege morgen van 9 mei, in de aanwezigheid van Stalins persoonlijke vertegenwoordiger in Berlijn.

Door dit verschil besloot de Sovjet-Unie 9 mei aan te houden als officiële einddatum van de oorlog. De Britten en Amerikanen hielden echter vast aan 8 mei, terwijl er op die dag feitelijk niets gebeurd is.

Nasleep

Op het moment zelf maakten deze verschillende opvattingen nog niet heel veel uit. De oorlog was immers voorbij en de precieze datum had daar geen invloed op. Tijdens de Koude Oorlog veranderde dit beeld echter. De geallieerden begonnen de ondertekening op 9 mei steeds meer te beschouwen als een propaganda-act, die enkel en alleen voor Stalin op touw was gezet. De tweede ondertekening was immers vooral een idee van de Sovjets geweest.

De feestdagen zijn aan beide kanten uiteindelijk nooit gewijzigd. Zodoende viert men nu nog steeds, bjina 80 jaar na dato, het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Europa op verschillende dagen.
